Cheapest Way to Keep Your Landline Number

Updated: Jan 25

Save your number, and your money.

So, you want a cheap way to keep your landline number?

You want to keep your landline number for as cheap as possible. That makes sense: you've had the number for decades, it's registered in more places than you know, and you need a home or business phone number.

In this blog post, we'll explain how to:

  • Learn about options for keeping your landline number.

  • Check if your number is eligible to be kept

  • Save money by choosing the right service provider.

  • Keep your number by transferring before you cancel.

Step 1: Learn Your Options For Keeping Your Landline Number

When keeping a landline number and switching providers, the most obvious solution might be to find a new basic landline phone service.

The problem is that this option is expensive and a hassle to setup. Usually, basic landline service costs $40/month, not including the cost of hardware.

Fortunately, there are two much more straightforward and cheaper solutions: Number Docking and Call Forwarding.

Option 1: Number docking ($2/month)

Number Docking, sometimes referred to as “Number Parking,” is the process of digitally storing your landline number and is, by far, the cheapest way to keep it.

Service providers who offer Number Docking will move your number from your current carrier and then store your number for a small fee on their network.

Some service providers will even let you get email and text notifications of who called your number, so you don’t miss calls entirely.

Option 2: Number Docking + Call Forwarding ($16/month)

You may want to continue receiving calls from your landline number. With Call Forwarding you can do precisely that without the hassle of landline hardware.

After docking your number, you can request to forward all calls to an existing cell phone. That means you can receive your landline calls right on your current cell phone in addition to the calls you already receive.

The cost for Call Forwarding can vary, but in most cases, it is around $16/month total. That is still half the price of a regular landline service, and you don’t need to buy any new hardware. Plus, these plans usually come with a host of free features, including spam blocking and caller ID.

Step 2: Check if Your Landline Number is Eligible

In most cases, folks who want to keep their landline number will need to move it to a new service provider. Unfortunately, not all landline numbers are eligible to be transferred or “ported” from their current carrier.

Luckily, we can check if your number is eligible. In the box below, type in your landline number, your provider, and your email, and we will get your results in seconds.

What does “Porting” mean?

Porting is just an industry term for moving one telephone number from one carrier to another.

Step 3: Choosing the Cheapest Provider

You want to find a company that can keep your number at a reasonable price. The most important factors to consider are:

  1. Availability - Does the provider offer number docking or call forwarding options?

  2. Cost - Does the provider give you the best price? Does it beat your current bill?

  3. Ease of Use - Does the provider make it easy to complete the process?

None of the big carriers meet these three criteria. Other options -- like Google Voice and VOIP services -- are expensive, difficult to set up, and a hassle to maintain. Plus, they don’t offer features like free spam blocking and call notifications.

Remember: Transfer Before You Cancel

First, let’s just talk about why it’s essential to transfer your landline number to a new provider before canceling with your current one.

At NumberDock, we handle thousands of landline numbers. Yet, nearly every day, we get folks asking us if they can move their number after they canceled service with their old landline provider. 99% of the time, we cannot help them because their carrier already sold their number to someone else.

No matter who you end up using, make sure you transfer your number before you cancel service with your existing service provider.

At NumberDock we can help our nationwide customers keep their landline numbers securely, efficiently, and cheaply. Our streamlined signup makes it easy to move your number in minutes - you can even schedule it for weeks in advance.
